Porting changes which provider serves an eligible number. It is a coordinated routing change, not a transfer of the phone system’s configuration or proof that every attached service will move with it.
Start with the complete number inventory
Identify the legal account holder, the numbers and ranges to move, and any linked services. The gaining provider specifies the evidence and authorisation it needs. A mismatch in account details or an overlooked number in a range can delay or complicate the request.
Configure the destination before cutover
Prepare inbound destinations, hours, queues and voicemail at the new service. Agree the migration window, testing contacts and failure procedure with the providers. Do not cancel the old service before the porting requirements and dependencies are confirmed; a number move and contract termination are separate processes.
Test both routing and presentation afterwards
Check inbound reachability from relevant networks and outbound caller ID, as well as messaging or other services if in scope. Keep the porting record and resolve partial failures promptly. Eligibility, lead times, required documents and escalation routes differ by market and provider; one provider’s guide is an example, not a worldwide rule.
