GO A LITTLE DEEPERTechnical deep dive
Compare the complete calling path rather than assuming that every older PBX is analogue or every VoIP service is hosted. A local PBX can use IP phones, and a gateway can connect legacy equipment to an IP service.
Separate access lines from the internal system
Traditional circuit-based connections reserve a voice channel differently from packet-based IP access. The PBX behind that connection can have its own mix of analogue, digital and IP endpoints. Inventory the external service, internal cabling and devices separately so a line migration does not become an unnecessary handset replacement.
Power and specialist devices change the migration plan
An IP endpoint relies on power and a working network. An analogue adapter may let a device connect, but that does not establish reliable fax, alarm, lift or payment-device operation. Ask the device/service owner to approve and test the migration, including power failure and connectivity loss.
Test working behavior, not just a dial tone
Check incoming numbers, outbound caller ID, transfers, touch-tone menus and continuity arrangements. Measure call quality at busy periods. The practical comparison is which supported design meets the business’s needs with clear maintenance responsibility, not whether one technology label sounds newer.
